Solar Ease Index
Permitting times, fees, and process vary widely between cities. We created the Solar Ease Index to help educate city governments and citizens on permit wait times and fees, and how they help or hinder homeowners deciding to switch solar. One of the most commmon pain points for homeowners installing solar is how long it takes to obtain permits. Depending on the city, permits take anywhere between a single day to a month.
In our study permitting fees have a very slight positive correlation (0.15) between permitting fees and permit wait times. Meaning, cities with higher permit fees tend to have longer wait times. A-Grade cities have the lowest permit fees and fastest permit times. These cities vary widely in size, politics, and geography. Their diversity proves that any city can have good wait times and low fees.Learn more
Almost all A-Grade cities turnaround permits to install solar within a single day. The worst cities can take a month.
Permitting fees are not flat in all cities. In Albany (CA), for instance, fees depend on the size of the system. For this study, an average system size of 6.7 kW/h was assumed.
